Lysander of Sparta

Important People

Lysander of Sparta was a highly skilled Spartan General who was in command when Sparta won the Peloponnesian War. Not much is known about Lysander's earlier life, but it is believed that he was born around 454 B.C. He fought many battles in the Peloponnesian War including the Battle of Aegospotami. General Lysander was the person who ordered the full speed charge at Athens' navy which ultimately led to Sparta defeating Athens at Aegospotami. The Battle of Aegospotami proved to many that Lysander of Sparta was a formidable general and tactician. Lysander did anything he could to win a battle, even if that meant executing 4,000 Athenian captives. In 395 B.C. Lysander was killed at the Battle of Haliartus, the first battle of the Corinthian war.

Conon of Athens

Conon of Athens was a great Athenian General who was in command of Athens during their defeat at Aegospotami. Although many Athenians died at the Battle of Aegospotami, Conon did not. Conon was born in 450 B.C. He was a skilled tactician and battle strategist despite his defeat at Aegospotami. After the Peloponnesian War Conon proved to many just how skilled he really was. During the Corinthian War, an experienced general was needed and so Conon was given an opportunity to redeem himself. After the Athenian navy was completely destroyed at the end of the Peloponnesian War, Athens struggled with trying to bring back their military power. Conon largely contributed to the resurfacing of Athenian military and naval power after their defeat.
