Athens and Sparta were not on very good terms during the period of Ancient Greece. They were the two most powerful city states. They had fought many times and had a big rivalry during their time of power. One of the greatest wars that they ever fought was that of the Peloponnesian war. This war lasted a long time and had many great battles. It had a huge impact on Athens once the war concluded. Out of the many battles that took place during this war the most important among them was the battle of Aegospotami, which featured the Spartan general, Lysander, who led the Spartans to victory over Conon, the Athenian leader who was leading Athens during the battle. The battle of Aegospotami is one of the most important battles of the Peloponnesian war because it completely destroyed the Athenian army and led to the conclusion of the Peloponnesian war, which was a big factor in the downfall of Ancient Greece.
